Don't Make New year Resolutions!
It's that time of year again.
How many of us go through the ritual of, "What resolutions didn't I keep last year"? Be honest - how far into 2012 did you get before those well intentioned resolutions went out the window? Did you lose those extra pounds that you justified over the holiday by assuring everybody (after you're third helping of Christmas Pudding), "Don't worry, I will get rid of all this when I start going to the gym regularly, that's one of my New Year . Did you manage to get to February before you reached for that cigarette that you had vowed to abstain from just four weeks earlier? How long was it before you reverted to watching three hours of ' reality TV' every night, instead of spending quality time with your family as you had promised them on December 31st as you drank your celebratory Champagne?
While it is true that we have very little influence on global events like the weather and external situations that touch all our lives, we do have an amazing amount of choice as to how we live our lives and how we deal with those events. So, what are you going to do this year? The Mayan 'Plan B' suggests that having survived yet another non event, we are entering a period of new awareness and attitude - whether you subscribe to this or not, - you are still faced with the awesome responsibility of deciding what you are going to make of your life in 2013.
Is there a more effective way of ensuring that next year is going to be better than this one? Well, we can certainly change our own awareness and attitude and one way of doing that is to forget new year resolutions, which are seldom fulfilled and usually broken.
Change your thinking instead to establish specific GOALS which give you something positive to aim for and more importantly, work towards. You will be surprised at the difference this makes to your vision of 2013.
Because goals need to be defined with a timeframe, the beginning of a new calendar year is a great time to review or set new goals, and hey!, don't forget to make sure they are YOUR goals, things that you are passionate about, giving you the motivation you need to take those small steps that lead you to your major goals.
To really make a difference in your life by setting definite goals instead of just making bland resolutions use the following simple formula to ensure success;
● Set some Goals that will stretch your vision. Make them attainable, but not inevitable without effort.
● Clarify each goal. Visualise how achievement will benefit you and (importantly), others around you.
● Write your goals down and then review them daily, - seriously! This will keep them in your mind.
● Establish what small steps are needed to reach those large goals, then concentrate on taking action.
● Start now! Don’t give in to procrastination - it is the greatest thief of success.
● Believe in yourself and move forward, doing something every day to take you towards your stated goal.
“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success”. - Pablo Picasso Today's Quote.
So forgive me if I don’t, ‘Wish’ you a Happy New year. Wishing gets you nowhere, but I would certainly like to ‘Help you have a Healthy, Wealthy and Happy New Year’ by encouraging you to set and get your new year goals.
OK, - so if you have to follow the herd and make a resolution, make a resolve to follow the formula above - and if you keep just that one resolution you will guarantee a great 2013.
PS Don’t forget to tell others about your goals, there’s nothing like accountability to keep you focused!
